Brainwave Entrainment: What It Means

Brainwave entrainment is a hypothesis that rhythmic external stimulation can influence neural oscillatory activity. It is frequently invoked in audio marketing, but the evidence is not a simple yes-or-no story.

What researchers test

Studies may use rhythmic auditory or visual stimulation and measure EEG responses. Binaural beats are one auditory approach: different tones presented separately to each ear create the perception of a beat at the frequency difference.

Evidence note. Binaural beats are a real auditory phenomenon, but a 2023 systematic review of 14 studies found inconsistent evidence for brainwave entrainment and substantial methodological heterogeneity. Product-specific outcome claims should not be inferred from general binaural-beat research. Read the systematic review.

Why this matters for product claims

Even if a study detects an EEG response, that does not automatically establish a meaningful cognitive outcome—and neither establishes that a commercial product will create wealth, manifestation or other life outcomes.
