Do Binaural Beats Work?

It depends on what “work” means. Binaural beats can be perceived as an auditory phenomenon. The stronger claim—that they reliably entrain brain activity and thereby produce specific psychological outcomes—has a much less settled evidence base.

What a systematic review found

A 2023 PLOS ONE systematic review included 14 studies meeting its criteria. The authors reported inconsistent outcomes: five studies supported the entrainment hypothesis, eight contradicted it and one had mixed results. They also highlighted substantial methodological heterogeneity.

What that does—and doesn't—tell us

The review does not prove binaural audio is useless, and it does not validate broad commercial promises. It says the entrainment question remains unsettled and better-standardized research is needed.

How to evaluate commercial audio

Separate three layers: the audible experience, measurable neural responses, and the advertised life outcome. Evidence at one layer should not be silently promoted into proof of the next.
